Examing the column contributions of the decision tree results can be quite helpful, too.
The VIF is certainly a way to determine which variables are over emphasized in the model. There are some good examples in later chapters that might be applicable to your particular situation, too. I'm no expert, but I've gone through that book as well (as an aside, I liked the examples and practice work).
